As a realtor of 12 plus years, it’s always good to learn a bit more about what challenges my clients may face and this spring, I certainly have, FIRST HAND!  I became a home seller this spring.  After 25 years in our family home in Medway,  after many celebrations, high school graduations, college graduations and my husband’s 50^th birthday which was a big event at our home in Medway (his 60^th however was celebrated quietly), we passed our home over to a new family just a week ago. 

   Selling was a hard decision to make and one we grappled with over the past few years. With one son in LA and the other in R.I and a daughter in Louisiana, it’s not always easy to get everyone together. So when we celebrated our last Christmas together in our Medway home last December, it was a particularly memory packed event. We went thru memorabilia of years gone by and decided what to save and what to toss. Although my oldest son was fine with throwing away his life story at 13 complete with a timeline of events in his life, including his first water skiing attempt and graduation from middle school, I chose to save that project. We did let go of the legos both sons spent hours and hours with in our sunroom for years. And the list went on and on. When we finished the holiday we had a box or two of memories which would follow us to our new home.

Leaving our neighborhood and town was difficult as well. As a realtor, you connect with the town and its residents on a different level than other jobs. I’m constantly interfacing with the people at town hall or stopping in to talk to the local insurance agent or mortgage provider and of course I work closely with those people moving in and moving out of town. And I was involved with a few town projects sitting on various committees. That was particularly hard to walk away from but as we’re now temporary residents in an abutting town, I had no choice as residency is required to be on a town committee. Still I knew that we may be returning to Medway once we find our new home, so knowing that, made it easier.

Deciding to sell, I’m told by others who are considering it, takes courage and it does! Moving away from friends and families is not easy – That last day we were at the house, many neighbors stopped to wish us well and often saw a tear in my eye. But it’s the right decision for us. We’re about to embark on a new chapter in our lives. My husband retired in December and although I will continue to work in residential real estate in Metrowest Boston for years to come, we look forward to some travel and finding our new home! I think I know a good realtor for that! 

Mothers day rolled around at just the right time this year – We had moved into our temporary housing and one of my sons showed up to spend the day with us. The day was particularly sweet. We decided to take a walk with the dog at a state park and come “home” for supper which was cooked by Dad and Son – I realized then, home is not a structure but where family is – And this Mother’s Day home was at our new apartment! A timely lesson for me!
